CY Control Cable
What is CY Control Flexible Cable?
Those looking for reduced-interference data transmission specify CY Control Cable. As a member of the control cable family, CY Cable is a flexible multi-core cable with class 5 flexible plain copper conductors, PVC insulation, a PETP (Polyethylene Terephthalate) separator, a tinned copper wire braid and a grey PVC sheath that is generally manufactured to BS6500 and VDE0250 standards.
What makes CY Flex particularly useful is the layer of tinned copper wire braid, which provides a screen to protect the CY Control Cable against external electromagnetic influences.
A Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) version of CY Control Cable is also manufactured. The materials in LS0H CY Control Cable differ slightly – XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation and a LS0H sheath are used in place of the PVC layers.
How are CY and CY LS0H Cable constructed?

| 1 | Conductor | Class 5 flexible plain copper conductors to BS EN 60228:2005 (previously BS6360), VDE0295, IEC 60228 |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Insulation | CY: PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type YI2 CY LS0H: XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) |
| 3 | Separator | PETP (Polyethylene Terephthalate) |
| 4 | Screen | LiYCY: TCWB (Tinned Copper Wire Braid) STCY*: Aluminium Foil and Braid CY LS0H: TCWB (Tinned Copper Wire Braid) |
| 5 | Sheath | CY: PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type YI2 CY LS0H: LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) |
By what other names is CY Cable known?
CY Cable is also known as Instrumentation Cable, CY Flex, CY Control Flex, Robotic Cable, Copper Screened Control Cable, Shielded Control Cable, Motor Cable and Screened Cable.
Which industries use CY Cable?
The Flexible CY Control Cable is used across a wide range of industries including building and construction, rail and transport infrastructure, and automation and process control.
CY Screened Multicore Cable is designed for use as interconnecting cable – for measuring, controlling or regulation – in signal and control equipment. Shielded CY Control Cable is found frequently on assembly and production lines, conveyors, in computer units and machine tool manufacture – especially in situations where reduced-interference signal and data transmission is vital. Its flexible properties make it the ideal choice for both linking static and mobile equipment, and fixed installations.
With the right protection (such as keeping it out of direct sunlight), this Shielded Flex is suitable for outdoor installations. It is mostly used, however, in dry or moist indoor environments and in conditions of medium mechanical stress.
What is BS6500?
BS6500 is a British Standard – last updated in 2000. It specifies requirements for the dimensions, construction and properties of insulated flexible cables with voltage ratings up to and including 300V/500V. This standard applies to CY Cable, SY Cable, YY Cable and other electrical cables used with appliances and equipment in domestic or similar environments.
Do all BS6500 CY Control Flexible Cables have a copper screen?
Some CY Cables are referred to as *STCY Cables, because they are constructed with a layer of aluminium foil and braid instead of a tinned copper wire braid. This is used in the CY Control Flex to provide additional protection against electromagnetic interference. ST stands for static screen.
When would I need to use Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) CY Cable?
With its LS0H sheath, LS0H CY Cable is recommended for installation in public areas – such as schools, hospitals and airports. When exposed to fire, the Shielded Flex’s LS0H sheath emits low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission). LS0H may also be referred to as LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free), 0HLS (Zero Halogen Low Smoke), LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) or HFFR (Halogen Free Flame Retardant).
When should I use YY or SY Control Cable?
If interference-free data transmission is your top priority then CY Flex is the most suitable control cable. If you require more robust mechanical protection, however, SY Control Cable – with its galvanised steel braid – is ideal. If neither characteristic is essential, however, Flexible YY Control Cable is recommended.
